About This Pilgrimage
The Camino del Norte — the Northern Way — is one of the great historic routes of the Camino de Santiago. For centuries, pilgrims have followed this northern path across Spain toward the tomb of St. James the Apostle in Santiago de Compostela.
The complete Northern Way traditionally begins near Irún, following Spain’s spectacular northern regions before eventually turning inland through Galicia. It is renowned for its natural beauty, green landscapes, historic towns and quieter pilgrimage atmosphere.
Our pilgrimage concentrates on approximately the final 118 km, beginning in Vilalba and continuing through rural Galicia until the Northern Way joins the Camino Francés at Arzúa. From there, pilgrims from different routes walk together for the final stages toward Santiago.
Along the way, one of the great spiritual and historical highlights is Sobrado dos Monxes, home to the magnificent Cistercian Monastery of Santa María de Sobrado, a centuries-old place of monastic life and pilgrim hospitality.
The pilgrimage culminates with our arrival in Santiago de Compostela, where we will visit the Cathedral and pray at the tomb of St. James the Apostle.
This route is an excellent choice for parishes and Catholic groups looking for a Camino that is somewhat quieter and more rural than the final section of the French Way, while still completing the traditional walking distance required for the Compostela, subject to the Cathedral’s requirements.
Why Choose the Northern Way?
The Camino del Norte has a very different personality from the better-known French Way.
The complete route is famous for the dramatic landscapes of northern Spain and is generally considered one of the more demanding Caminos. However, this program focuses specifically on its final Galician section, creating a much more accessible itinerary of approximately 118 km.
It is especially attractive for pilgrims looking for a route with fewer crowds, rural landscapes and a strong sense of silence and retreat.
The stay in Sobrado dos Monxes also gives this particular Camino a distinctive monastic dimension before the route eventually joins the French Way in Arzúa.
For Catholic groups, this makes the Northern Way an excellent combination of physical pilgrimage, contemplation, community and encounter with Spain’s centuries-old Christian heritage.
Adapt the Camino to Your Group
This itinerary is a suggested program and can be adapted for parishes, dioceses, Catholic schools, youth ministries, families and private groups.
Walking the Camino should not be treated as a competition.
For groups with older pilgrims or participants of different physical abilities, we can incorporate a support vehicle, allowing each person to walk according to his or her capabilities while remaining part of the same pilgrimage.
Walking distances, accommodations, meals, Mass arrangements and additional visits can all be adapted according to the group’s needs.
What matters is not how quickly we walk, but why we are walking and toward whom we are journeying.

Proposed Itinerary
Days 1 & 2 — USA – Madrid
Departure for Spain
Departure from our designated U.S. airport aboard our overnight flight to Madrid.
Upon arrival in Spain, reception and transfer to our hotel. Time to rest following the international journey and prepare for the pilgrimage ahead.
Depending on arrival schedules, a welcome dinner and introductory spiritual meeting may be arranged.

Day 3 — Madrid – Vilalba
Journey to the Northern Way
After breakfast, departure by private motorcoach toward Galicia and Vilalba, where our walking pilgrimage will begin.
Vilalba is an important stop on the Galician section of the Camino del Norte and provides the starting point for our approximately 118-km journey toward Santiago.
Upon arrival, we will check into our accommodations and prepare our Pilgrim Credentials.
Depending on schedules, there may be an opportunity for Holy Mass, an orientation walk and a spiritual introduction to the Camino.

Day 4 — Vilalba – Baamonde
Our Camino Begins
Approximately 18.5 km / 11.5 miles
Today we take our first steps on the Camino del Norte.
Leaving Vilalba, we begin walking through the characteristic countryside of Galicia, following rural roads, wooded paths and small communities toward Baamonde.
The first stage allows us to discover the rhythm of pilgrimage: walking, prayer, conversation, silence and fellowship.
Rather than simply traveling between destinations, the road itself becomes part of our spiritual experience.
Arrival in Baamonde, dinner and rest.

Day 5 — Baamonde – Miraz
Into Rural Galicia
Approximately 15 km / 9.3 miles
Today’s shorter stage takes us deeper into the peaceful landscapes of Galicia.
We continue along the traditional Camino markers through small villages, forests and farmland toward Miraz.
The relatively moderate distance provides additional time for prayer, rest and community life. Depending on the final arrangements, Holy Mass or additional spiritual activities may be incorporated into the day.

Day 6 — Miraz – Sobrado dos Monxes
A Monastic Heart of the Northern Way
Approximately 24.9 km / 15.5 miles
Today is one of the most significant stages of our Northern Way pilgrimage.
After breakfast, we continue through the Galician countryside toward Sobrado dos Monxes.
Our destination is famous for the magnificent Monastery of Santa María de Sobrado, a historic Cistercian monastery whose origins reach back more than a thousand years.
The monastery embodies one of the defining traditions of the Camino: the relationship between pilgrimage, prayer, monastic life and Christian hospitality.
After our day’s walk, we will have an opportunity to discover this remarkable spiritual setting and reflect upon the journey we have made so far.

Day 7 — Sobrado dos Monxes – Arzúa
Where the Caminos Meet
Approximately 22 km / 13.7 miles
After breakfast, we leave Sobrado and continue toward Arzúa.
This is an especially interesting day in the geography of the Camino because we gradually approach the point where the Northern Way joins the Camino Francés.
After several days on the quieter paths of the Camino del Norte, we begin to encounter increasing numbers of pilgrims following different routes but sharing the same destination.
Arrival in Arzúa, a traditional Camino town also famous for its Arzúa-Ulloa cheese.

Day 8 — Arzúa – O Pedrouzo
Santiago Draws Near
Approximately 19 km / 11.8 miles
Our penultimate walking stage takes us through forests, country lanes and small Galician communities toward O Pedrouzo.
By now, the yellow arrows and scallop shells have become familiar companions.
Santiago is close, and today’s walk provides an opportunity to reflect on the intentions we carried with us when we began the Camino.
Arrival in O Pedrouzo and an early evening of rest as we prepare ourselves spiritually and physically for tomorrow’s final walk.

Day 9 — O Pedrouzo – Santiago de Compostela
Arrival at the Tomb of St. James
Approximately 19 km / 11.8 miles
Today we complete our pilgrimage.
Leaving O Pedrouzo, we follow the Camino toward Monte do Gozo — the Mount of Joy — traditionally the place where pilgrims first glimpse the towers of Santiago Cathedral.
From here, we descend toward Santiago.
We enter the historic city on foot and make our way through its ancient streets until we finally arrive in Plaza del Obradoiro.
Before us stands the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, built over the traditional resting place of St. James the Greater, Apostle of Jesus Christ.
After approximately 118 km of walking, our destination has finally been reached.
Time will be available to enter the Cathedral and begin experiencing the spiritual heart of Santiago.

Day 10 — Santiago de Compostela
At the Tomb of the Apostle
Today is dedicated to the true destination of our Camino.
We will visit the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, descend to pray before the Tomb of St. James the Apostle, and participate in the Pilgrim’s Mass, according to the Cathedral’s schedule.
Pilgrims who fulfill the corresponding requirements may request their Compostela.
The remainder of the day can include a guided visit of the historic center, personal prayer, free time or additional spiritual activities.
A farewell dinner may also be arranged to celebrate the completion of our Camino and share together what the pilgrimage has meant to us.

Day 11 — Santiago de Compostela – USA
Return Home
After breakfast, transfer to Santiago de Compostela Airport for our return journey to the United States, connecting through Madrid or another European hub according to the selected flights.
We return home after walking the final section of one of Spain’s great medieval pilgrimage routes and reaching the tomb of St. James the Apostle.
