The shrine stands on the site associated with the first parish Mass in St. Augustine and the beginnings of the oldest continuously existing Catholic parish community in the continental United Father Francisco L\u00f3pez de Mendoza Grajales celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving, marking the beginning of Catholic parish life in the new settlement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5939\" data-end=\"6051\">We will have time to explore these sacred grounds, dominated by the Great Cross rising above the Matanzas River.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6053\" data-end=\"6188\">Particularly important is the historic chapel of <strong data-start=\"6102\" data-end=\"6187\">Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de La Leche y Buen Parto \u2014 Our Lady of the Milk and Happy Delivery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6190\" data-end=\"6490\">Spanish settlers brought this Marian devotion to Florida, and a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of La Leche was established here in the 17th century. Today the devotion remains especially associated with couples praying for children, expectant mothers and families.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6492\" data-end=\"6565\">Time will be provided for prayer and, subject to arrangements, Holy Mass.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6567\" data-end=\"6612\">We then continue into historic St. Augustine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6614\" data-end=\"6786\">Our visits may include the <strong data-start=\"6641\" data-end=\"6680\">Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine<\/strong>, together with the city&#8217;s historic streets, colonial buildings and the impressive Castillo de San Marcos.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6788\" data-end=\"6984\">The combination is particularly valuable for pilgrims: we are not simply visiting old churches but seeing the <strong data-start=\"6898\" data-end=\"12582\">The present church dates from 1905, but Catholic activity in the Keys reaches much further back. Particularly interesting for the narrative of this pilgrimage is that Key West itself became home to a substantial Cuban population in the 19th century.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12584\" data-end=\"12795\">In <strong data-start=\"12587\" data-end=\"12684\">1879, a Cuban chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre was established in Key West<\/strong> for Cubans who had come to the island seeking freedom from Spanish rule.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12797\" data-end=\"12878\">This creates a remarkable connection with what we have just encountered in Miami.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12880\" data-end=\"12939\">The Cuban Catholic story of Florida did not begin in Miami.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12941\" data-end=\"12998\">Key West was already experiencing it generations earlier.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13000\" data-end=\"13159\">On the Basilica grounds we will also visit the <strong data-start=\"13047\" data-end=\"13077\">Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto<\/strong>, constructed from natural rock collected around the island and dedicated in 1922.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13161\" data-end=\"13489\">Its creator, Sister Louis Gabriel, had experienced several devastating hurricanes and built the grotto seeking Mary&#8217;s protection for the people of Key West.
