When asked to explain his priestly ministry, he answered that his vocation was to celebrate the Holy Mass.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3257\" data-end=\"3284\">A celebration was prepared.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3286\" data-end=\"3366\">But as the Mass began, the priest stopped: there was no crucifix upon the altar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3368\" data-end=\"3712\">According to the tradition preserved in Caravaca, <strong data-start=\"3418\" data-end=\"3489\">two angels appeared carrying the Cross and placed it upon the altar<\/strong>, allowing the priest to continue the Eucharistic celebration. The account further relates that what was witnessed led the Muslim ruler and members of his court to embrace Christianity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3714\" data-end=\"3869\">Whether approaching Caravaca through its documented medieval history or through this centuries-old devotional tradition, the same reality becomes apparent:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3871\" data-end=\"3948\"><strong data-start=\"3871\" data-end=\"3948\">the Cross has defined the spiritual identity of Caravaca for generations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3950\" data-end=\"4169\">The relic was historically data-end=\"4378\">to encounter God differently from the way we do in ordinary life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4381\" data-end=\"4450\">And Caravaca offers parishes a particularly powerful spiritual theme.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4452\" data-end=\"4600\">Here we can bring before the Cross our families, our suffering, our gratitude, our sins, our fears and the people for whom we have promised to pray.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4602\" data-end=\"4636\">We can contemplate Christ&#8217;s words:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4638\" data-end=\"4754\"><strong data-start=\"4638\" data-end=\"4754\">\u201cIf anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.\u201d \u2014 Luke 9:23<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4756\" data-end=\"4820\">The pilgrimage therefore becomes an invitation to ask ourselves:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4822\" data-end=\"4847\">What cross am I carrying?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4849\" <strong data-start=\"5046\" data-end=\"5199\">Am I willing to follow Christ all the way to the Cross, trusting that the Cross never has the final word \u2014 because beyond it stands the Resurrection?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5201\" data-end=\"5231\">This is why we go to Caravaca.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5233\" data-end=\"5289\">Not simply to visit another beautiful Spanish sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5291\" data-end=\"5336\"><strong data-start=\"5291\" data-end=\"5336\">We go as pilgrims to the Cross of Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1
