His pilgrimage is traditionally regarded as the first recorded pilgrimage to Santiago, which is why the route he followed became known as the Camino Primitivo — the Original or Primitive Way.

The complete route begins in Oviedo and crosses the mountains of Asturias and Galicia. It is considered one of the most beautiful, historic and demanding of the major Camino routes.

Our pilgrimage offers a more accessible way to experience this extraordinary tradition, concentrating on approximately the final 100 km from Lugo to Santiago de Compostela. We will walk through rural Galicia until reaching Melide, where the Primitive Way joins the French Way for the final approach to Santiago.

The pilgrimage culminates at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where we will pray before the tomb of St. James and celebrate the completion of a journey whose origins reach back more than twelve centuries.

Why Choose the Primitive Way?

The Camino Primitivo is particularly meaningful for pilgrims attracted by the origins of the Camino itself.

Unlike routes that developed later as the pilgrimage to Santiago expanded across medieval Europe, the Primitive Way recalls the earliest chapter of the Jacobean tradition and the journey associated with King Alfonso II of Asturias.

The complete Camino Primitivo is physically demanding, particularly through the mountains of Asturias. Our itinerary, however, concentrates on its final Galician section from Lugo, making the experience considerably more accessible while preserving the history and spiritual identity of the route.

It is an excellent option for those who have already completed another Camino and want to discover something different, as well as first-time pilgrims looking for a route with a strong connection to the earliest history of Santiago de Compostela.

Adapt the Camino to Your Group

This pilgrimage can be adapted for parishes, dioceses, Catholic schools, youth ministries, families and private groups.

Physical condition should not prevent someone from experiencing the spiritual reality of the Camino.

For older pilgrims or groups with different walking abilities, we can arrange a support vehicle throughout the pilgrimage. Participants can therefore walk according to their capabilities and rejoin the group when necessary.

Walking distances, accommodations, meals, Masses, spiritual activities and additional visits can all be customized.

The objective is not simply to walk 100 kilometers. <strong data-start="9996"
