His life changed dramatically after he was seriously wounded at the <strong data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"614\">Battle of Pamplona in 1521<\/strong>. During his long recovery at his family home in Loyola, reading about Christ and the lives of the saints gradually awakened in him a desire for an entirely different kind of life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"849\">What followed was an extraordinary spiritual journey.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"851\" data-end=\"1156\">From <strong data-start=\"856\" data-end=\"866\">Loyola<\/strong>, we will follow Ignatius toward <strong data-start=\"899\" data-end=\"913\">Montserrat<\/strong>, where he laid down his sword before the Virgin and spent the night in prayer, and then to <strong data-start=\"1005\" data-end=\"1016\">Manresa<\/strong>, where months of prayer, penance and mystical experiences helped shape what would eventually become his celebrated <strong data-start=\"1132\" data-end=\"1155\">Spiritual Exercises<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1158\" data-end=\"1512\">This pilgrimage therefore follows more than the biography of a saint. Before the image of the Blessed Virgin, he kept an all-night vigil and <strong data-start=\"4553\" data-end=\"4576\">laid down his sword<\/strong>, symbolically leaving behind his former life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4624\" data-end=\"4864\">From Montserrat, Ignatius descended toward <strong data-start=\"4667\" data-end=\"4678\">Manresa<\/strong>. We follow the same spiritual geography to the city where what he initially expected to be a short stay became an intense period of prayer, discernment, penance and mystical experience.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4866\" data-end=\"4995\">Here we will visit the celebrated <strong data-start=\"4900\" data-end=\"4924\">Cave of St. Ignatius<\/strong>, today incorporated into an important center of Ignatian spirituality.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4997\" data-end=\"5167\">We will also recall his experience beside the <strong data-start=\"5043\" data-end=\"5061\">Cardener River<\/strong>, where Ignatius described receiving such profound interior illumination that the world seemed new to him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5169\" data-end=\"5286\">Many of the insights developed during his time in Manresa would eventually contribute to the <strong data-start=\"5262\" data-end=\"5285\">Spiritual Exercises<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5288\" data-end=\"5313\"><strong data-start=\"5288\" data-end=\"5313\">Overnight in Manresa.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5315\" data-end=\"5318\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"4zxgml\" data-start=\"5320\" data-end=\"5386\">Day 5 \u2014 Manresa \u2013 Huesca \u2013 Sos del Rey Cat\u00f3lico \u2013 San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/h2>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"4zf9xm\" data-start=\"5388\" data-end=\"5413\">Across Northern Spain<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5415\" data-end=\"5517\">After breakfast, we begin our journey north and west through some of Spain&#8217;s most historic landscapes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5519\" data-end=\"5726\">Depending on the final program, we may stop in <strong data-start=\"5566\" data-end=\"5576\">Huesca<\/strong> before continuing toward <strong data-start=\"5602\" data-end=\"5626\">Sos del Rey Cat\u00f3lico<\/strong>, one of Spain&#8217;s beautifully preserved medieval towns and birthplace of King Ferdinand II of Aragon.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5728\" data-end=\"5978\">Beyond its beauty, the journey allows us to understand the political and religious Spain into which Ignatius was born at the end of the 15th century \u2014 a period that would soon witness extraordinary changes in Europe and throughout the Catholic world.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5980\" data-end=\"6073\">We continue into the <strong data-start=\"6001\" data-end=\"6019\">Basque Country<\/strong>, homeland of St. Ignatius, arriving in San Sebasti\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6075\" data-end=\"6106\"><strong data-start=\"6075\" data-end=\"6106\">Overnight in San Sebasti\u00e1n.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"6108\" data-end=\"6111\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1cofy77\" data-start=\"6113\" data-end=\"6162\">Day 6 \u2014 San Sebasti\u00e1n \u2013 Loyola \u2013 San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/h2>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"johpgd\" data-start=\"6164\" data-end=\"6198\">The Conversion of St. Ignatius<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6200\" data-end=\"6255\">Today we reach the heart of our pilgrimage: <strong data-start=\"6244\" data-end=\"6254\">Loyola<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6257\" data-end=\"6334\">Here, in 1491, <strong data-start=\"6272\" data-end=\"6297\">\u00cd\u00f1igo L\u00f3pez de Loyola<\/strong> was born into a Basque noble family.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6336\" data-end=\"6601\">After being seriously wounded while defending Pamplona in 1521, Ignatius was brought back to his family home to recover. During his convalescence, he asked for books of chivalry but instead was given religious works concerning <strong data-start=\"6563\" data-end=\"6600\">the life of Christ and the saints<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6603\" data-end=\"6638\">Their effect upon him was profound.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6640\" data-end=\"6903\">Ignatius began noticing the difference between ambitions that temporarily excited him and thoughts of serving Christ that left him with a deeper and more lasting peace.
