It was here, during a period of prayer and fasting in 1224, that St. Francis received the <strong data-start=\"1482\" data-end=\"1494\">Stigmata<\/strong>, bearing in his own body the wounds of Christ.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1590\">From La Verna, we begin our pilgrimage on foot.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1592\" data-end=\"1842\">Over the following days, the route takes us through <strong data-start=\"1644\" data-end=\"1745\">Pieve Santo Stefano, Sansepolcro, Citerna, Citt\u00e0 di Castello, Pietralunga, Gubbio and Valfabbrica<\/strong>, crossing from Tuscany into Umbria and following ancient roads, mountain paths and rural trails.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1844\" data-end=\"1898\">Each day&#8217;s walk becomes part of the pilgrimage itself.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1900\" data-end=\"1922\">There is time to pray.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1924\" data-end=\"1938\">Time to speak.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1940\" data-end=\"1964\">Time to walk in silence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1966\" data-end=\"1995\">Time to contemplate creation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1997\" data-end=\"2094\">And time to rediscover the radical simplicity of the Gospel that transformed the life of Francis.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2096\" data-end=\"2263\">The route eventually reaches <strong data-start=\"2125\" data-end=\"2135\">Gubbio<\/strong>, forever associated with the famous story of St. Francis and the wolf. From there, we follow the Franciscan Path toward Assisi.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2265\" data-end=\"2378\">The culmination comes when, after days on foot, <strong data-start=\"2313\" data-end=\"2377\">Assisi finally appears in the distance beneath Mount Subasio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2565\">We enter the city as pilgrims and walk toward the great <strong data-start=\"2436\" data-end=\"2463\">Basilica of St. Francis<\/strong>, beneath which lies the tomb of the saint whose footsteps have accompanied us throughout the journey.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2567\" data-end=\"2763\">Our final day is dedicated to Franciscan Assisi: the Basilica of St. Francis, the tomb of St. Clare, the <strong data-start=\"2672\" data-end=\"2687\">Porziuncola<\/strong>, and the places associated with the final moments of Francis&#8217; The countryside, forests and mountains become our surroundings as we begin to understand why walking has occupied such an important place in Christian pilgrimage for centuries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6319\" data-end=\"6576\">At Pieve Santo Stefano, we encounter the tradition of the <strong data-start=\"6377\" data-end=\"6422\">Madonna dei Lumi \u2014 Our Lady of the Lights<\/strong>. In 1589, according to local tradition, mysterious lights interpreted as a procession of angels were observed moving toward a sacred image of the Virgin.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6578\" data-end=\"6707\">The sanctuary that developed from this devotion remains an important local place of prayer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6709\" data-end=\"6746\"><strong data-start=\"6709\" identity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7027\" data-end=\"7201\">According to tradition, two pilgrims, <strong data-start=\"7065\" data-end=\"7086\">Arcano and Egidio<\/strong>, returned from Jerusalem carrying sacred relics and established themselves here after Arcano experienced a vision.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7203\" data-end=\"7324\">A sanctuary developed in honor of the <strong data-start=\"7241\" data-end=\"7269\">Holy Sepulchre of Christ<\/strong>, eventually giving the town its name: <strong data-start=\"7308\" data-end=\"7323\">Sansepolcro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7326\" data-end=\"7532\">Inside the Cathedral we will also encounter the ancient <strong data-start=\"7382\" data-end=\"7397\">Volto Santo<\/strong>, a medieval representation of the begins to take on a different character.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8257\" data-end=\"8388\">The physical effort, silence, conversations between pilgrims and daily celebration of our faith become part of a data-start=\"9486\" data-end=\"9614\">We leave the Tiber Valley and climb into the <strong data-start=\"9531\" data-end=\"9556\">green hills of Umbria<\/strong>, surrounded by countryside and long stretches of silence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9616\" data-end=\"9755\">Our destination is <strong data-start=\"9635\" data-end=\"9650\">Pietralunga<\/strong>, a small medieval town whose Christian traditions are particularly associated with <strong data-start=\"9734\" data-end=\"9754\">St. Crescentinus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9757\" data-end=\"10043\">At approximately <strong data-start=\"9774\" data-end=\"9791\">28 kilometers<\/strong>, this is a substantial walking day and an important part of the physical challenge of the pilgrimage. Rather than destroying the animal, Francis approached it peacefully and established reconciliation between the wolf and the townspeople.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10911\" data-end=\"11031\">Whether contemplated as history, tradition or spiritual teaching, the story expresses something essential about Francis:<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"x3fpvy\" data-start=\"11033\" data-end=\"11109\">Peace is not merely the absence of conflict. It requires reconciliation.<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"11111\" data-end=\"11343\">We explore this extraordinary medieval town before retiring for the evening.
