Here, according to ancient Christian tradition, both completed their earthly mission through martyrdom.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1039\" data-end=\"1107\">Their blood became inseparable from the story of the Church in Rome.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1109\" data-end=\"1334\"><strong data-start=\"1109\" data-end=\"1334\">St. Peter was crucified near the Vatican Hill and buried close to the place of his martyrdom. St. Paul, a Roman citizen, was traditionally believed to have been beheaded outside the city and buried along the Via Ostiense.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1336\" data-end=\"1513\">From the earliest generations, Christians preserved their memory and traveled to their tombs. Eventually, two of Christianity&#8217;s greatest churches rose above those burial places:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1515\" data-end=\"1579\"><strong data-start=\"1515\" data-end=\"1539\">St. Peter&#8217;s Basilica<\/strong><br data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1542\" \/>and<br data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1548\" \/><strong data-start=\"1548\" data-end=\"1579\">St. Paul Outside the Walls.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1581\" data-end=\"1674\">This pilgrimage has been designed to go deeper than a conventional \u201cCatholic Rome\u201d itinerary.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1676\" data-end=\"1959\">We will follow the <strong data-start=\"1695\" data-end=\"1730\">Rome of the Apostles themselves<\/strong>: the places connected with their arrival, preaching, imprisonment and martyrdom; the ancient roads traveled by the first Christians; the catacombs where the Church buried its dead; and above all, the <strong data-start=\"1931\" data-end=\"1958\">tombs of Peter and Paul<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1961\" data-end=\"2266\">The pilgrimage also introduces us to the beautiful early Christian tradition of depicting <strong data-start=\"2051\" data-end=\"2091\">Peter and Paul embracing one another<\/strong>. Two profoundly different personalities\u2014one a Galilean fisherman, the other an educated Pharisee and Roman citizen\u2014became the great complementary pillars of the Roman Church.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2268\" data-end=\"2297\">And their story is not alone.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2299\" data-end=\"2552\">At the <strong data-start=\"2306\" data-end=\"2346\">Basilica of the Twelve Holy Apostles<\/strong>, pilgrims can venerate relics traditionally attributed to <strong data-start=\"2405\" data-end=\"2454\">St. Philip the Apostle and St. James the Less<\/strong>, allowing us to Overnight in Rome.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5982\" data-end=\"5985\" \/>\n<h1 data-section-id=\"xo25gs\" data-start=\"5987\" data-end=\"6036\">DAY 3 \u2014 Peter &amp; Paul in the Rome of the Martyrs<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"6038\" data-end=\"6134\">Today we leave monumental Christian Rome behind and enter the world of the <strong data-start=\"6113\" data-end=\"6133\">first Christians<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6136\" data-end=\"6332\">We begin in Ancient Rome, exploring the <strong data-start=\"6176\" data-end=\"6205\">Roman Forum and Colosseum<\/strong> and discovering the political, religious and social environment in which Christianity first took root in the imperial capital.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6334\" data-end=\"6476\">Nearby we visit the <strong data-start=\"6354\" data-end=\"6374\">Mamertine Prison<\/strong>, traditionally associated with the imprisonment of <strong data-start=\"6426\" data-end=\"6452\">St. Peter and St. Paul<\/strong> before their martyrdom.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6478\" data-end=\"6561\">The pilgrimage then follows the ancient roads leading beyond the monumental center.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6563\" data-end=\"6692\">We travel along the <strong data-start=\"6583\" data-end=\"6596\">Via Appia<\/strong>, one of the great roads of the Roman world, and visit the small Church of <strong data-start=\"6671\" data-end=\"6691\">Domine Quo Vadis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6694\" data-end=\"6834\">According to one of Rome&#8217;s most beloved early Christian traditions, Peter was fleeing persecution when he encountered Christ here and asked:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6836\" data-end=\"6885\"><em data-start=\"6836\" data-end=\"6885\">Domine, quo vadis? \u2014 Lord, where are you going?<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6887\" data-end=\"6972\">Christ&#8217;s response led Peter to turn back toward Rome and ultimately accept martyrdom.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6974\" data-end=\"7179\">We continue into the world of the first Roman Christians with a visit to one of the ancient <strong data-start=\"7066\" data-end=\"7079\">Catacombs<\/strong>, discovering the burial practices, symbols, prayer and faith of the persecuted Christian community.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7181\" data-end=\"7374\">Particular attention may be given to the complex of <strong data-start=\"7233\" data-end=\"7268\">St. Sebastian Outside the Walls<\/strong>, whose history preserves an important ancient association with the veneration of <strong data-start=\"7350\" data-end=\"7373\">both Peter and Paul<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7376\" data-end=\"7504\">This day allows us to encounter not simply two individual Apostles, but the <strong data-start=\"7452\" data-end=\"7503\">Church of Rome that formed around their witness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7506\" data-end=\"7540\"><strong data-start=\"7506\" data-end=\"7540\">Full board.
