The rhythm of walking gives us opportunities for conversation, silence, prayer and contemplation of the natural world that Francis loved so profoundly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6195\" data-end=\"6283\">Upon reaching Pieve Santo Stefano, we discover a community with ancient Christian roots.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6285\" data-end=\"6527\">The area is associated with the <strong data-start=\"6317\" data-end=\"6379\">Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Lumi \u2014 Our Lady of the Lights<\/strong>, whose origins are connected with a late-16th-century tradition of mysterious lights and Sepulcher.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6987\" data-end=\"7181\">According to local tradition, the town&#8217;s origins are connected with two medieval pilgrims returning from Jerusalem who carried relics from the Holy Land and established a place of devotion here.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7183\" data-end=\"7341\">We visit the Cathedral and encounter the celebrated <strong data-start=\"7235\" data-end=\"7250\">Volto Santo<\/strong>, an ancient representation of the crucified Christ dressed in priestly and royal garments.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7343\" data-end=\"7443\">After a day on the road, the image of Christ crucified invites us to understand Francis more deeply.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7445\" data-end=\"7525\">His radical simplicity cannot be blessing the hill on which the settlement stands.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8134\" data-end=\"8316\">Within this beautifully preserved town we can visit the <strong data-start=\"8190\" data-end=\"9769\">Long stretches of countryside provide opportunities for periods of silence and personal prayer as we make our way toward <strong data-start=\"9753\" data-end=\"9768\">Pietralunga<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9771\" data-end=\"9982\">The medieval town retains traces of its ancient and Lombard past and is associated with devotion to <strong the end of our walking stage, we continue to one of the most important Franciscan towns outside Assisi:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10669\" data-end=\"10680\"><strong data-start=\"10669\" data-end=\"10680\">Gubbio.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10682\" data-end=\"10799\">Here we remember one of the most famous stories from the life of Francis \u2014 his encounter with the <strong data-start=\"10780\" data-end=\"10798\">Wolf of Gubbio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10801\" data-end=\"11020\">According to Franciscan tradition, a wolf had terrorized the people of the town. Rather than destroying the animal, Francis approached it peacefully and brought about reconciliation between the wolf and the inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11022\" data-end=\"11141\">Whether contemplated as history, tradition or spiritual teaching, the story captures something essential about Francis:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11143\" data-end=\"11247\"><strong data-start=\"11143\" data-end=\"11247\">peace instead of fear, reconciliation instead of violence, and fraternity extending to all creation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11249\" data-end=\"11331\">We explore this data-end=\"11813\">We cross the Gubbio Valley before climbing again through the Umbrian hills.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11815\" data-end=\"11932\">Eventually we reach the area of <strong data-start=\"11847\" data-end=\"11865\">Biscina Castle<\/strong>, an ancient fortress overlooking the valley of the River Chiascio.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11934\" data-end=\"11979\">By now, walking has developed its own rhythm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"11981\" data-end=\"12106\">Morning departure.<br data-start=\"11999\" data-end=\"12002\" \/>The sound of footsteps.<br data-start=\"12025\" ridge.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12566\" data-end=\"12627\">And then comes one of the defining moments of the pilgrimage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12629\" data-end=\"12690\">In the distance, <strong data-start=\"12646\" data-end=\"12689\">Mount Subasio and Assisi finally appear<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"12692\" data-end=\"12780\">After days of walking, the city is no longer simply another Francis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"13882\" data-end=\"14010\">After walking through the landscapes associated with his life, arriving at his tomb takes on an entirely different
