data-start=\"3597\" data-end=\"3633\">DAY 2 \u2014 \u00c1vila: The World of Teresa<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"3635\" data-end=\"3750\">Before beginning the long walk toward Alba de Tormes, we devote a complete day to understanding <strong data-start=\"3731\" data-end=\"3749\">who Teresa was<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3752\" data-end=\"3868\">We begin at the <strong data-start=\"3768\" data-end=\"3802\">Convent and Church of La Santa<\/strong>, built on the site traditionally identified with her family home.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3870\" data-end=\"4017\">We continue to the <strong data-start=\"3889\" data-end=\"3920\">Church of San Juan Bautista<\/strong>, where Teresa was baptized on April 4, 1515, and where the historic baptismal font is preserved.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4019\" data-end=\"4122\">Our Teresian pilgrimage through \u00c1vila also includes two places essential to understanding her vocation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4124\" data-end=\"4295\">At the <strong data-start=\"4131\" data-end=\"4163\">Monastery of the Incarnation<\/strong>, we enter the world in which Teresa lived for many years as a Carmelite and where decisive chapters of her spiritual life unfolded.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4297\" data-end=\"4311\">Then we visit:<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1ic6gf7\" data-start=\"4313\" data-end=\"4352\">San Jos\u00e9 \u2014 Teresa&#8217;s First Foundation<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4354\" data-end=\"4505\">Here in 1562 Teresa established the first monastery of her reform, beginning the extraordinary movement that would become the <strong data-end=\"5326\">Narrillos de San Leonardo, Carde\u00f1osa and Pe\u00f1alba de \u00c1vila<\/strong>, moving gradually from the granite landscape surrounding \u00c1vila into the great agricultural plain of <strong data-start=\"5427\" data-end=\"5440\">La Mora\u00f1a<\/strong>. Historic route accounts describe this transition from rougher terrain around \u00c1vila toward broad, gently rolling farmland.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5603\" data-end=\"5695\">There will be moments for conversation, but also designated stretches of <strong data-start=\"5676\" data-end=\"5694\">silent walking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5697\" data-end=\"5717\">Eventually we reach:<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1e2zimp\" data-start=\"5719\" data-end=\"5734\">Gotarrendura<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5736\" data-end=\"5878\">Teresa had family connections here and spent periods of her childhood and youth in this rural landscape.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5880\" data-end=\"6017\">We visit the places associated with her memory, including the traditional <strong data-start=\"5954\" data-end=\"5981\">Palomar de Santa Teresa<\/strong>, according to opening arrangements.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6019\" data-end=\"6096\">After completing our first stage, transfer to our accommodation if necessary.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6098\" data-end=\"6129\"><strong data-start=\"6098\" data-end=\"6129\">Spiritual Theme: Detachment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6131\" data-end=\"6182\">What do we discover when we leave the walls behind?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6184\" data-end=\"6234\"><strong data-start=\"6184\" data-end=\"6234\">Holy Mass when possible. Dinner and overnight.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"6236\" data-end=\"6239\" \/>\n<h1 data-section-id=\"9b23uj\" data-start=\"6241\" data-end=\"6276\">DAY 4 \u2014 Gotarrendura \u2192 Fontiveros<\/h1>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1r1a0ap\" data-start=\"6278\" data-end=\"6299\">Walking Stage 2<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6300\" data-end=\"6334\"><strong data-start=\"6300\" data-end=\"6334\">Approx. 25\u201328 km \/ 16\u201317 miles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6336\" data-end=\"6394\">Our second walking day takes us deeper into <strong data-start=\"6380\" data-end=\"6393\">La Mora\u00f1a<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6396\" data-end=\"6540\">The landscape is spacious and remarkably uncluttered: farmland, enormous horizons, small villages and a sky that seems to occupy half the world.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6542\" data-end=\"6633\">We pass through or near <strong data-start=\"6566\" data-end=\"6632\">El Oso, Papatrigo, Narros de Saldue\u00f1a and Collado de Contreras<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6635\" data-end=\"6850\">At El Oso, the route encounters traces of an even older Castile, including a <strong data-start=\"6712\" data-end=\"6733\">Vett\u00f3n stone boar<\/strong>, while Narros de Saldue\u00f1a is dominated by its distinctive 15th-century castle.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6852\" data-end=\"6993\">The simplicity of the landscape makes this an ideal day for the <strong data-start=\"6916\" data-end=\"6926\">Rosary<\/strong>, spiritual conversation and a longer period of walking in silence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6995\" data-end=\"7064\">Our destination is one of the great places of Carmelite spirituality:<\/p>\n<h1 data-section-id=\"xxontt\" data-start=\"7066\" data-end=\"7078\">Fontiveros<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"7080\" data-end=\"7166\">Here <strong data-start=\"7085\" data-end=\"7127\">St. John of the Cross was born in 1542<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7168\" data-end=\"7308\">We visit the principal sites associated with him, including the <strong data-start=\"7232\" data-end=\"7258\">Church of San Cipriano<\/strong>, his birthplace tradition and Carmelite heritage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7310\" data-end=\"7433\">Teresa&#8217;s road has now brought us into the story of the man who would become her great collaborator in the reform of Carmel.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7435\" data-end=\"7463\"><strong data-start=\"7435\" data-end=\"7463\">Spiritual Theme: Silence<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"7465\" data-end=\"7558\">\n<p data-start=\"7467\" data-end=\"7558\"><em data-start=\"7467\" data-end=\"7530\">Where there is no love, put love, and you will draw out love.<\/em><br data-start=\"7530\" data-end=\"7533\" \/>\u2014 St. John of the Cross<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"7560\" data-end=\"7633\"><strong data-start=\"7560\" data-end=\"7633\">Holy Mass when possible. Dinner and overnight in the Fontiveros area.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"7635\" data-end=\"7638\" \/>\n<h1 data-section-id=\"ihw0il\" data-start=\"7640\" data-end=\"7689\">DAY 5 \u2014 Fontiveros \u2192 Duruelo \u2192 Mancera de Abajo<\/h1>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1r1a134\" data-start=\"7691\" data-end=\"7712\">Walking Stage 3<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"7713\" data-end=\"7747\"><strong data-start=\"7713\" data-end=\"7747\">Approx. 22\u201325 km \/ 14\u201316 miles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7749\" data-end=\"7824\">Today is perhaps the most distinctly <strong data-start=\"7786\" data-end=\"7799\">Carmelite<\/strong> stage of the pilgrimage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7826\" data-end=\"7997\">Leaving Fontiveros, we continue through the open countryside toward <strong data-start=\"7894\" data-end=\"7940\">Rivilla de Barajas and Narros del Castillo<\/strong> before approaching a small place of enormous importance:<\/p>\n<h1 data-section-id=\"1rx222e\" data-start=\"7999\" data-end=\"8008\">Duruelo<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"8010\" data-end=\"8055\">Its modest appearance hides its significance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8057\" data-end=\"8281\">Here, in <strong data-start=\"8066\" data-end=\"8083\">November 1568<\/strong>, St. John of the Cross and Fr. Antonio de Jes\u00fas established the first community of <strong data-start=\"8167\" data-end=\"8197\">Discalced Carmelite friars<\/strong>, following the reform envisioned with Teresa.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8283\" data-end=\"8313\">We allow meaningful time here.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8315\" data-end=\"8462\">Rather than simply photographing another monument, Duruelo should become one of the pilgrimage&#8217;s principal moments of <strong data-start=\"8433\" data-end=\"8461\">silence and recollection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8464\" data-end=\"8588\">Depending on arrangements, we data-end=\"9429\">We walk through an agricultural landscape that has changed surprisingly little in its fundamental character: grain fields, villages, church towers and enormous Castilian skies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9431\" data-end=\"9570\">At <strong data-start=\"9434\" data-end=\"9446\">Macotera<\/strong>, we can visit the Church of Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Castillo, noted for its data-end=\"10352\">in silence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10355\" data-end=\"10437\">Across the Salamanca countryside, the towers of our destination eventually appear.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10439\" data-end=\"10482\">And after more than one hundred kilometers:<\/p>\n<h1 data-section-id=\"la11lo\" data-start=\"10484\" data-end=\"10518\">We enter Alba de Tormes on foot.<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"10520\" data-end=\"10564\">This is where Teresa&#8217;s earthly camino ended.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10566\" data-end=\"10643\">She arrived in Alba gravely ill in 1582 and died here on <strong data-start=\"10623\" data-end=\"10642\">October 4, 1582<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10645\" data-end=\"10757\">Our destination is the <strong data-start=\"10668\" data-end=\"10729\">Monastery of the Annunciation of the Discalced Carmelites<\/strong>, founded by Teresa in 1571.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"10759\" data-end=\"10884\">Here we encounter the place where
