About This Pilgrimage
The Camino Portugués — the Portuguese Way — is one of the great historic routes of the Camino de Santiago, followed for centuries by pilgrims traveling north from Portugal toward the tomb of St. James the Apostle.
Its origins reach deep into the Middle Ages, when pilgrims departed from cities such as Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto, traveling through Portugal before crossing the Minho River into Galicia and continuing toward Santiago de Compostela.
Our pilgrimage begins in Tui, just across the river from Portugal, and covers approximately 120 km on foot. This makes it an excellent option for Catholic groups looking for a manageable Camino that still provides a genuine multi-day walking pilgrimage.
The route combines Galician countryside, historic towns, ancient churches, stone crosses, forests and centuries of Christian pilgrimage tradition. It also passes through Padrón, a place intimately connected with the tradition of St. James and the arrival of his remains in Galicia.
Throughout the journey, walking becomes part of the spiritual experience: time for prayer, sacrifice, fellowship and reflection, culminating in the emotional arrival at the Cathedral of Santiago and the tomb of the Apostle.
The program can be adapted for parishes, Catholic organizations, schools, families, young adults and pilgrims of different physical abilities, including the possibility of support transportation.

Proposed Itinerary
Days 1 & 2 — USA – Madrid
Departure for Spain
Departure from our designated U.S. airport aboard our overnight flight to Madrid.
Upon arrival in Spain, reception and transfer to our hotel. The remainder of the day will be available to rest following the international journey.
Depending on flight schedules, a welcome dinner and introductory spiritual meeting may be arranged.

Day 3 — Madrid – Tui
Journey to the Beginning of Our Camino
After breakfast, departure toward Galicia and the historic town of Tui, beautifully situated above the Minho River and facing Portugal on the opposite bank.
Tui has been an important gateway for pilgrims following the Portuguese Way for centuries.
Depending on our arrival time, we may visit the impressive Cathedral of Santa María de Tui, receive our Pilgrim Credentials and celebrate Holy Mass as we spiritually prepare for the journey ahead.
Tonight is about preparation: tomorrow, we begin walking.

Day 4 — Tui – O Porriño
Our Camino Begins
Approximately 18.7 km / 11.6 miles
Today we take our first steps on the Camino Portugués.
Leaving the historic streets of Tui behind, we begin our journey north through the Galician countryside, following the familiar yellow arrows and scallop shells that have guided generations of pilgrims toward Santiago.
This first stage allows us to settle into the rhythm of pilgrimage: walking together, praying, sharing conversations and gradually leaving behind the distractions of everyday life.

Day 5 — O Porriño – Arcade
Through the Galician Countryside
Approximately 23 km / 14.3 miles
After breakfast, we continue along the Portuguese Way.
Today’s Camino takes us through small communities, wooded areas and rural landscapes as we continue northward.
Along the route, we pass through Redondela, an important junction where different branches of the Portuguese Camino converge, before continuing toward Arcade, traditionally known for its connection with the Ría de Vigo and its seafood.

Day 6 — Arcade – Pontevedra
A Gentler Day on the Camino
Approximately 12 km / 7.5 miles
Today’s shorter walking stage provides an opportunity to enjoy the Camino at a more relaxed pace.
We leave Arcade and continue toward Pontevedra, crossing landscapes where the maritime character of Galicia gradually gives way to historic towns and countryside.
Upon arrival, we will have time to discover Pontevedra’s beautiful historic center.
Of particular interest to pilgrims is the Sanctuary of the Pilgrim Virgin — Santuario de la Virgen Peregrina — whose unusual scallop-shell-shaped church has become one of the symbols of the Portuguese Way.
The shorter stage may also provide additional time for Holy Mass, prayer, rest or a guided visit, depending on the final program.

Day 7 — Pontevedra – Caldas de Reis
Following an Ancient Pilgrimage Road
Approximately 21 km / 13 miles
After breakfast, we leave Pontevedra and continue north.
Today’s route brings us through forests, small villages, stone crosses and characteristic Galician landscapes.
Our destination is Caldas de Reis, a historic town known since antiquity for its thermal waters and today an important stopping point for pilgrims approaching Santiago.
By this stage, the daily rhythm of walking has become familiar. The Camino provides moments for conversation and community, but also something increasingly difficult to find in everyday life: time for silence and prayer.

Day 8 — Caldas de Reis – Padrón
Following the Tradition of St. James
Approximately 18.6 km / 11.6 miles
Today we continue toward one of the most spiritually significant places on the Portuguese Way: Padrón.
According to Christian tradition, it was in this area that the boat carrying the remains of St. James the Apostle arrived in Galicia after his martyrdom in Jerusalem.
The town’s name is traditionally associated with the pedrón, the ancient stone preserved in the Church of Santiago de Padrón and linked by tradition with the Apostle’s arrival.
For our pilgrimage, Padrón therefore represents much more than another overnight stop. We are entering the landscape of the traditions surrounding St. James himself, just one final stage away from his tomb in Santiago.

Day 9 — Padrón – Santiago de Compostela
Arrival at the Tomb of St. James
Approximately 24.3 km / 15.1 miles
The final walking stage of our Camino.
We leave Padrón knowing that, by the end of the day, we hope to stand before the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
The final kilometers become a time of anticipation and reflection. After days of walking together, we gradually approach Santiago and enter the historic city as pilgrims have done for centuries.
Finally, we reach Plaza del Obradoiro.
Before us stands the Cathedral of Santiago, built over the traditional resting place of St. James the Greater, Apostle of Jesus Christ.
Our walking pilgrimage is complete.
There will be time to enter the Cathedral and begin experiencing Santiago before enjoying a well-deserved evening of rest.

Day 10 — Santiago de Compostela
At the Tomb of the Apostle
Today is deliberately dedicated entirely to Santiago de Compostela.
After completing approximately 120 km on foot, we can experience the spiritual destination of our pilgrimage without rushing.
We will visit the Cathedral of Santiago, pray at the Tomb of St. James the Apostle and participate in the Pilgrim’s Mass, according to the Cathedral’s schedule.
Pilgrims who fulfill the corresponding requirements may also request their Compostela.
The remainder of the day can include a guided visit of Santiago’s magnificent historic center, personal prayer, free time or additional spiritual activities.
A farewell dinner may be arranged to celebrate our Camino and share together what the pilgrimage has meant to us.

Day 11 — Santiago de Compostela – USA
Return Home
After breakfast, transfer to Santiago de Compostela Airport for our return journey to the United States, connecting through Madrid or another European airport according to the selected flights.
We return home having completed the final approximately 120 km of the Portuguese Way, carrying with us not simply the memory of the places we have visited, but the experience of having walked as pilgrims to the tomb of St. James the Apostle.
