A Journey Through Monasteries, Saints, Relics & the Camino de Santiago
Northern Spain preserves some of the deepest roots of Christian Europe.
Across Navarra, Castile, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia, monasteries, Romanesque churches, Marian sanctuaries and ancient pilgrimage roads tell the story of a faith that helped shape the spiritual and cultural identity of the continent.
This pilgrimage brings together some of the most remarkable Catholic sites of northern Spain.
We will visit Leyre, one of the great historic monasteries of Navarra; Javier, birthplace of St. Francis Xavier; Santo Domingo de Silos, renowned for its Benedictine tradition and Romanesque cloister; and Santo Toribio de Liébana, where the Lignum Crucis is venerated.
We will pray before Our Lady of Covadonga, visit the Holy Chamber of Oviedo Cathedral, home to the Holy Shroud, and finally reach Santiago de Compostela, where the tomb of St. James the Apostle has drawn pilgrims for more than a thousand years.
Along the way, we will also experience the Camino de Santiago, Romanesque art, medieval towns, the landscapes of the Picos de Europa and some of the most beautiful cities of northern Spain.
Designed especially for parishes, Catholic organizations and faith-based groups, this pilgrimage combines prayer, history, sacred art, culture and fellowship in a journey through one of Europe’s great Christian landscapes.
Monasteries That Shaped Christian Spain
The monasteries of northern Spain are not simply beautiful historic buildings.
For centuries, they were centers of prayer, learning, hospitality, art and evangelization.
At Leyre, monks prayed while the medieval Kingdom of Navarra took shape.
At Santo Domingo de Silos, the Benedictine tradition continues to sanctify the hours through liturgical prayer.
At Santo Toribio de Liébana, pilgrims have traveled into the mountains to venerate the Cross of Christ.
And along the Camino de Santiago, monasteries and religious communities welcomed pilgrims traveling toward the Apostle.
This pilgrimage invites us to encounter these places not simply as monuments, but as witnesses to a way of life centered upon prayer, community and the search for God.
From St. Francis Xavier to St. James the Apostle
Two saints give this journey an especially powerful missionary dimension.
In Javier, we encounter the childhood home of St. Francis Xavier, who would leave Navarra and travel farther than almost any missionary of his generation, preaching the Gospel in India, Southeast Asia and Japan.
At the end of our journey, in Santiago de Compostela, we reach the tomb of St. James the Apostle, one of the Twelve sent by Christ to proclaim the Gospel.
Between them stretches the history of Christian mission:
an Apostle sent from Jerusalem and, centuries later, a missionary from Spain carrying that same Gospel toward Asia.
The Camino de Santiago
Much of this journey follows or intersects with the ancient Camino Francés.
Nájera.
Santo Domingo de la Calzada.
Frómista.
Burgos.
Santiago itself.
For more than a thousand years, these places have welcomed pilgrims traveling westward toward Compostela.
For groups wishing for a more active pilgrimage, the itinerary may be adapted to incorporate selected walking sections of the Camino de Santiago without requiring the group to walk the entire route.
This makes the journey particularly suitable for parishes with pilgrims of different ages and levels of physical ability.
A Journey Through the Christian North of Spain
Northern Spain is a land of ancient monasteries, pilgrimage roads, mountain sanctuaries and cities shaped by centuries of faith.
At Leyre, history and monastic prayer meet.
At Javier, a young nobleman was born who would become one of the great missionaries of the Church.
At Silos, Benedictine prayer continues within walls that have heard the Psalms for centuries.
At Santo Toribio, the Cross stands at the heart of the pilgrimage.
At Covadonga, Marian devotion rises from the mountains.
At Oviedo, pilgrims encounter relics associated with the Passion of Christ.
And finally, in Santiago, we arrive before an Apostle.
It is a journey across northern Spain.
But more importantly, it is a journey through different expressions of the same faith.

Proposed Itinerary
Day 1 — USA – Madrid
Our Pilgrimage Begins
At the appropriate time, we will meet at our designated U.S. departure airport and board our overnight transatlantic flight to Madrid, Spain.
Meals and refreshments will be served according to the airline’s schedule.
Overnight flight to Europe.
Day 2 — Madrid – Daroca – Estella – Pamplona
Welcome to Spain
Upon arrival in Madrid, we will be welcomed by our local team and accompanying guide and begin our journey toward northern Spain.
Depending on the group’s international arrival time, we may stop in Daroca, one of Aragón’s most important historic towns, still enclosed by an impressive system of medieval walls.
We then continue toward Estella-Lizarra, founded in the 11th century and one of the great historic towns of the Camino de Santiago.
Its churches, bridges and streets recall centuries of pilgrims traveling west toward Compostela.
We continue to Pamplona, capital of Navarra.

Today’s visits will be adapted according to the group’s international flight schedule.
Day 3 — Pamplona – Leyre – Javier – Olite – Pamplona
St. Francis Xavier & the Monasteries of Navarra
After breakfast, we travel toward the Monastery of Leyre, dramatically situated above the Yesa Reservoir.
One of the great spiritual and historical centers of Navarra, Leyre preserves important Romanesque architecture and the historic pantheon of the kings of Pamplona.
Subject to arrangements, time may be available for prayer or participation in the liturgical life of the monastery.
We then continue to Javier, birthplace of St. Francis Xavier.
Here we will visit the castle associated with the saint’s childhood and reflect upon the extraordinary life of the Jesuit missionary who would eventually carry the Gospel across Asia.
Depending on the final program, Holy Mass may be celebrated in Javier.
On our return toward Pamplona, we may stop in Olite, known for its magnificent medieval Royal Palace, and at the remarkable Romanesque church of Santa María de Eunate, closely associated with the Camino de Santiago.

Day 4 — Pamplona – Nájera – Santo Domingo de la Calzada – Santo Domingo de Silos – Burgos
Along the Camino de Santiago
After breakfast, we join one of the great historic corridors of Christian pilgrimage: the Camino Francés.
Our first stop is Nájera, where we may visit the Monastery of Santa María la Real, deeply connected with the medieval kingdoms of northern Spain.
We then continue to Santo Domingo de la Calzada.
The town takes its name from the saint who dedicated his life to serving pilgrims traveling toward Santiago, building roads, bridges, hospitals and shelters.
Our journey continues toward Santo Domingo de Silos, home to one of Spain’s most celebrated Benedictine monasteries.
We will visit the monastery and its magnificent Romanesque cloister, renowned for its carved capitals and reliefs.
Where schedules permit, we may also have the opportunity to experience the monks’ tradition of Gregorian liturgical prayer.
We then continue to Burgos.

Day 5 — Burgos – Frómista – Santo Toribio de Liébana – Gijón
Romanesque Art & the True Cross
After breakfast, we continue westward through the landscapes of Castile.
Our first stop will be Frómista, where we visit the extraordinary Church of San Martín, one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture along the Camino de Santiago.
We then turn north toward the mountains of Cantabria and the beautiful Liébana Valley.
After time in Potes, we continue to the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana.
Here pilgrims have venerated for centuries the Lignum Crucis, traditionally associated with a large fragment of the Cross of Christ.
Santo Toribio also possesses its own ancient Holy Year tradition, making it one of Spain’s historic pilgrimage centers.
Subject to ecclesiastical arrangements, we may celebrate Holy Mass and spend time in prayer before the relic.
Later, we continue toward Gijón, on the Cantabrian coast.

Day 6 — Gijón – Covadonga – Cangas de Onís – Gijón
Our Lady of Covadonga
Today we travel toward Covadonga, one of the great Marian sanctuaries of Spain.
At the Holy Cave, we will venerate Our Lady of Covadonga — La Santina, patroness of Asturias.
The sanctuary is deeply connected with the origins of the medieval Christian Kingdom of Asturias and stands in one of the most dramatic natural landscapes in northern Spain.
Subject to arrangements, Holy Mass may be celebrated at or near the sanctuary.
Depending on weather and access conditions, the group may also choose an optional excursion toward the Lakes of Covadonga in the Picos de Europa.
After lunch, we continue to Cangas de Onís, traditionally remembered as the first capital of the Kingdom of Asturias.
Return to Gijón.

Day 7 — Gijón – Oviedo – Gijón
The Holy Shroud of Oviedo
After breakfast, we begin with a panoramic introduction to Gijón, one of the principal cities of Asturias.
Later, we travel to Oviedo, one of the most important historic Christian cities in northern Spain.
Our principal visit will be the Cathedral of San Salvador.
Within the Cathedral’s Cámara Santa — Holy Chamber — are preserved some of the most treasured relics of medieval Spain, including the Cross of the Angels, Cross of Victory and the Holy Shroud of Oviedo.
The Holy Shroud is traditionally associated with the cloth placed over the face of Christ after His death, making Oviedo a particularly meaningful destination for pilgrims reflecting upon the Passion.
Subject to arrangements, Holy Mass may be celebrated during our visit.
We may also enjoy time in Oviedo’s historic center before returning to Gijón.

Day 8 — Gijón – Santiago de Compostela
To the Tomb of St. James the Apostle
After breakfast, we depart Asturias and journey west toward Galicia.
Our destination is Santiago de Compostela, one of the great pilgrimage cities of Christianity.
According to ancient tradition, the tomb of St. James the Greater, one of the Twelve Apostles, was discovered here in the 9th century.
From that moment, pilgrims from across Europe began traveling toward Santiago, creating the network of pilgrimage roads we now know as the Camino de Santiago.
Upon arrival, we will have our first opportunity to explore the historic center and approach the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago.
Depending on timing and arrangements, we may attend or celebrate Holy Mass.

Day 9 — Santiago de Compostela – Zamora
From the Apostle to Romanesque Castile
After breakfast, we may have additional time in Santiago de Compostela for prayer at the tomb of the Apostle, participation in Mass or further exploration of the Cathedral.
We then begin our journey south and east toward Zamora.
Upon arrival, we will discover a city famous for its exceptional concentration of Romanesque churches.
Our visit may include the Cathedral and a guided walk through the historic center.

Day 10 — Zamora – Segovia – Madrid
Medieval & Christian Castile
After breakfast, we continue toward Segovia.
This extraordinary city brings together layers of Spanish history, from its famous Roman aqueduct to its medieval churches, Gothic Cathedral and fairytale-like Alcázar.
We will enjoy a panoramic or guided visit through the historic center, with time for lunch.
Depending on the final program, we may incorporate Holy Mass or additional Catholic visits before continuing to Madrid.
Arrival and check-in at our hotel.
A farewell dinner may be arranged for the group.
Overnight: Madrid
Day 11 — Madrid – USA
Return Home
After breakfast, at the appropriate time, transfer to Madrid International Airport for our return flight to the United States.
We return home after a journey through some of northern Spain’s most important Christian landscapes.
We have prayed where St. Francis Xavier was born, visited monasteries that preserved the faith for centuries, followed the Camino toward Santiago, venerated relics associated with the Passion of Christ, prayed before Our Lady of Covadonga and finally reached the tomb of St. James the Apostle.
Arrival in the United States and end of our pilgrimage services.
