At the crossroads of the Camino de Santiago and the ancient Kingdom of Castile stands Burgos, one of Spain’s great historic and Catholic cities.

Dominating its medieval center is the magnificent Cathedral of Burgos, one of the masterpieces of European Gothic architecture and an enduring landmark for generations of pilgrims traveling toward the tomb of St. James the Apostle in Santiago de Compostela.

But Burgos is only the beginning.

This pilgrimage takes us into the spiritual and cultural landscapes of Castile, where monasteries, abbeys, medieval villages and ancient pilgrimage roads tell the story of centuries of Christian life.

We will visit the great Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos, famous throughout the Catholic world for its monastic tradition and Gregorian chant; the historic Monastery of Las Huelgas; the Abbey of San Pedro de Cardeña; and the beautiful Cartuja de Miraflores.

Burgos: A City on the Camino de Santiago

Burgos should not be understood simply as another historic Spanish city.

For generations of pilgrims, it has been one of the great landmarks of the Camino Francés — the French Way to Santiago de Compostela.

Pilgrims enter its medieval center and encounter the great Cathedral before continuing westward toward León, Galicia and eventually the tomb of St. James the Apostle.

This gives Burgos a special identity.

It is simultaneously a city of kings and bishops, Gothic art and medieval history — and a city of pilgrims.

For groups interested in the Camino, this itinerary may also incorporate an opportunity to walk a selected section of the Camino de Santiago around Burgos, experiencing the pilgrimage road firsthand without requiring the group to undertake a complete walking Camino.

Santo Domingo de Silos: A Living Monastic Tradition

One of the great strengths of this itinerary is Santo Domingo de Silos.

The monastery should not be presented merely as an architectural monument.

It remains a living Benedictine community.

For centuries, monks have gathered here according to the rhythm of monastic prayer.

Their tradition of Gregorian chant became internationally known, but for pilgrims its deeper significance lies in experiencing the ancient Catholic practice of sanctifying the hours of the day through common prayer.

Where schedules permit, we can seek to coordinate our visit so that pilgrims have the opportunity to experience part of this living monastic tradition.
