About This Pilgrimage
Walk the final section of the Camino Francés, the most famous and traditional of all the routes leading to the tomb of St. James the Apostle in Santiago de Compostela.
Beginning in Sarria, this pilgrimage covers approximately 110–115 km on foot, the classic final stretch of the French Way and one of the best choices for pilgrims undertaking the Camino for the first time.
But the Camino is much more than a walking tour.
For more than a thousand years, Christians from across Europe and beyond have walked toward Santiago as an act of faith, penance, prayer and conversion. Each day on the road becomes part of the pilgrimage itself: walking through rural Galicia, praying together, celebrating the Eucharist, sharing meals and difficulties, and gradually approaching the tomb of the Apostle.
The culmination comes on the final morning as we reach Monte do Gozo — the Mount of Joy — and see the towers of Santiago Cathedral in the distance. From there, we make our final approach into the historic city and enter Plaza del Obradoiro, standing before the Cathedral that guards the tomb of St. James.
This program is especially suitable for parishes, Catholic groups, families, young adults and first-time Camino pilgrims. The itinerary can also be adapted to different ages and physical abilities, including the possibility of support transportation, allowing pilgrims to walk according to their capabilities while remaining part of the spiritual journey.
The Camino Can Be Adapted to Your Group
This itinerary is a suggested Essential French Way, but no two Camino groups need to be identical.
We can adapt the pilgrimage according to your group’s age, physical ability, available days, budget and spiritual objectives. Walking distances can be reconsidered, support transportation can be incorporated, and additional nights or spiritual visits can be added.
We also organize other historic routes to Santiago, including the Portuguese Way, Northern Way, Primitive Way and English Way, as well as longer versions of the French Way.
Who Is This Camino For?
The Essential French Way is particularly recommended for those making their first Camino de Santiago.
You do not need to be an athlete to be a pilgrim. What matters most is approaching the Camino with the right spiritual disposition and preparing appropriately for the journey.
For parish groups with older pilgrims or participants of different physical abilities, the program can be organized with a support vehicle throughout the walking route. This provides greater flexibility: pilgrims can walk the distances appropriate to them while continuing to participate in the prayer, Masses, meals and community life of the pilgrimage.
The goal is not simply to count kilometers.

Proposed Itinerary
Day 1 — USA – Madrid
Departure for Spain
Meet at our designated U.S. departure airport and board our overnight flight to Madrid.
Our pilgrimage begins as we leave home behind and prepare ourselves for the journey to Santiago.

Day 2 — Arrival in Madrid
Welcome to Spain
Arrival in Madrid, where we will be welcomed by our local team and transferred to our hotel.
The remainder of the day will be available to rest and recover from the international journey before beginning our Camino experience.
Depending on arrival time, a welcome dinner and introductory meeting can be arranged.

Day 3 — Madrid – Sarria
Journey to the Beginning of Our Camino
After breakfast, departure by private motorcoach toward Galicia and Sarria, our starting point on the Camino de Santiago.
Upon arrival, we will settle into our accommodations and prepare for the pilgrimage ahead.
This evening provides an opportunity for an orientation and spiritual preparation for the Camino, reviewing the route, our Pilgrim Credentials and the meaning of undertaking the journey to the tomb of St. James.

Day 4 — Sarria – Portomarín
Our Camino Begins
Approximately 22 km / 13.7 miles
Today we take our first steps on the Camino Francés.
Leaving Sarria, the Way carries us through the characteristic landscapes of rural Galicia: green fields, wooded paths, stone villages, small churches and ancient pathways traveled by generations of pilgrims before us.
This first stage allows us to gradually settle into the rhythm of the Camino — walking, praying, reflecting and sharing the road with fellow pilgrims.
Our destination is Portomarín, beautifully situated beside the Belesar Reservoir.

Day 5 — Portomarín – Palas de Rei
Deeper Into Galicia
Approximately 25 km / 15.5 miles
After breakfast, we continue along the Camino toward Palas de Rei.
Today’s route takes us deeper into the Galician countryside and provides an opportunity to discover Castromaior, an important archaeological site preserving the remains of an ancient fortified settlement.
Throughout the day, the Camino continues to reveal its unique character: small villages, rural churches, crosses, pilgrim markers and encounters with people walking toward the same destination.

Day 6 — Palas de Rei – Arzúa
The Longest Stage
Approximately 29 km / 18 miles
Today is the longest walking stage of our pilgrimage.
We will cross rural paths, forests, streams and historic bridges as we continue toward Santiago.
Along the way, we reach Melide, one of the best-known stops on the French Way and an excellent place to discover one of Galicia’s most famous dishes: pulpo a la gallega.
From Melide, we continue toward Arzúa, another town deeply connected with the Camino and renowned for its protected Arzúa-Ulloa cheese.
After a demanding but rewarding day, we enjoy dinner and a well-earned rest.

Day 7 — Arzúa – O Pedrouzo
Santiago Draws Near
Approximately 19 km / 11.8 miles
Our penultimate walking stage takes us from Arzúa toward O Pedrouzo.
The route is gentler than the previous day’s stage, taking us through forests, country lanes and small Galician communities.
There is a different feeling on the Camino today: Santiago is now very close.
Arrival in O Pedrouzo and an early evening of rest as we prepare spiritually and physically for the final approach to the tomb of the Apostle.

Day 8 — O Pedrouzo – Santiago de Compostela
Arrival at the Tomb of St. James
Approximately 19 km / 11.8 miles
Today we complete our Camino.
Leaving O Pedrouzo, we follow the familiar yellow arrows and scallop shells toward Santiago.
Eventually, we climb to Monte do Gozo — the Mount of Joy — traditionally one of the most emotional moments of the pilgrimage. From here, pilgrims can see the towers of the Cathedral of Santiago and realize that their destination is finally within reach.
We descend toward the city and walk together through the streets of Santiago until we make our final entrance into Plaza del Obradoiro.
Before us stands the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
After more than 110 kilometers on foot, we have arrived at the traditional resting place of St. James the Greater, Apostle of Jesus Christ.
Time will be available to embrace the spiritual significance of our arrival, visit the Cathedral and, for qualifying pilgrims, complete the formalities associated with receiving the Compostela.

Day 9 — Santiago de Compostela
At the Tomb of the Apostle
After days of walking, today is dedicated to experiencing Santiago without rushing.
We will visit the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and have the opportunity to pray at the tomb of St. James.
We will participate in the Pilgrim’s Mass, joining pilgrims who have arrived in Santiago from different routes and countries around the world.
The remainder of the day will be available for prayer, rest and discovering the beautiful historic center of Santiago.
For many pilgrims, this quieter day becomes as important as the walk itself: an opportunity to reflect upon why we came, what we experienced along the Way and what we will take home with us.
A farewell dinner can be arranged to celebrate the completion of our pilgrimage.

Day 10 — Santiago de Compostela – USA
Return Home
After breakfast, transfer to Santiago de Compostela Airport for our return journey.
Depending on available international connections, flights may connect through Madrid or another European hub.
We return home having completed the final section of the Camino Francés and, more importantly, having made a pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James the Apostle.
